Semimembranosus is one of the three muscles that make up the hamstrings group, located at the back of the thigh. It plays a crucial role in flexing the knee and extending the hip, providing strength and stability during activities like walking and running. The muscle also assists in rotating the thigh medially.

The name "semimembranosus" comes from the Latin words "semi," meaning half, and "membranosus," meaning membrane-like, highlighting the muscle's partially tendinous shape.

If the Semimembranosus were absent or damaged, a person would experience difficulty in bending the knee and extending the hip, significantly impairing their ability to walk, run, or perform movements involving the thigh and lower leg. This loss of function would lead to instability and increased susceptibility to injury in the legs.
