The trapezius is a large, diamond-shaped muscle that extends from the skull to the lower thoracic vertebrae and laterally to the shoulder blades. It stabilizes and moves the scapula, controlling shoulder blade position during arm movements. The muscle has three functional regions that can elevate, depress, and retract the shoulders.

The name comes from the Greek word "trapeza" meaning table, referring to its geometric trapezoid or diamond shape.
