Orbicularis oculi is a circular muscle surrounding the eye socket, responsible for closing the eyelids and facilitating blinking. It plays a critical role in protecting the eyes from foreign particles and excessive light by enabling the eyelids to close rapidly. The muscle is also involved in expressing emotions through facial movements around the eyes.

The name "orbicularis oculi" is derived from Latin, where "orbicularis" means circular or disc-like, and "oculi" refers to the eye. This nomenclature reflects the circular shape of the muscle around the eye.

Without the orbicularis oculi, the eyes would lack the ability to close voluntarily, impairing protective reflexes like blinking and potentially leading to eye damage from environmental exposure. Additionally, facial expressions around the eyes would be significantly reduced, affecting non-verbal communication.
