Splenius capitis is a broad, strap-like muscle located in the back of the neck, crucial for extending and rotating the head. It originates from the lower cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae and inserts onto the mastoid process of the temporal bone and the occipital bone. This muscle works in conjunction with other muscles to facilitate head movement and maintain posture.

The name "splenius capitis" is derived from the Latin words "splenius," meaning "bandage," referring to its shape, and "capitis," meaning "of the head," indicating its location and function.

Without the splenius capitis, the ability to extend and rotate the head would be significantly impaired, making actions like looking upward or turning the head side-to-side difficult. Additionally, maintaining head and neck posture would be challenging, affecting overall balance and coordination.
