Levator scapulae is a muscle located at the side of the neck that elevates the scapula, or shoulder blade, facilitating shoulder movements such as shrugging. It also assists in neck movement by contributing to lateral flexion when the scapula is stabilized. This muscle helps maintain proper posture and balance in the upper body.

The name "levator scapulae" originates from the Latin words "levare," meaning "to lift," and "scapula," referring to the shoulder blade. This name directly indicates the muscle's primary role in lifting the scapula.

Without a functional levator scapulae, the ability to raise the shoulders would be compromised, impacting actions like shrugging or stabilizing the shoulder when lifting objects. Additionally, there could be increased difficulty in neck stability and motion, affecting various head movements.
