The pubic symphysis is a cartilaginous joint that connects the left and right pubic bones at the front of the pelvis. This strong, flexible connection helps maintain pelvic stability while allowing slight movement during walking and childbirth. The joint contains a fibrocartilaginous disc that acts as a shock absorber and becomes more flexible during pregnancy due to hormonal changes.

The term "pubic" refers to its location in the pubic region, while "symphysis" comes from the Greek word "symphysis" meaning "growing together," describing how the two pubic bones are united at this joint. This anatomical name was chosen because a symphysis is a type of joint where bones are connected by fibrocartilage.
