The ischial tuberosity is a thick, roughened prominence on the inferior portion of the ischium that bears our body weight when sitting. It serves as a major attachment point for the hamstring muscles and the sacrotuberous ligament, which helps stabilize the pelvis. This robust structure also plays a crucial role in maintaining proper posture while seated and provides leverage for powerful leg movements.

The term "ischial" refers to its location on the ischium bone, while "tuberosity" comes from the Latin word "tuber," meaning a swelling, bump, or protuberance. The name literally describes its nature as a bony prominence on the ischium.
