The medial malleolus is the bony prominence on the inside of the ankle, formed by the lower end of the tibia. It serves as an attachment point for the strong deltoid ligament, which helps stabilize the ankle joint and prevent excessive eversion of the foot. This structure, along with its fibular counterpart (lateral malleolus), creates a mortise-like bracket that grips the talus bone, providing stability during walking and standing.

The term "malleolus" comes from the Latin word "malleus" meaning hammer or mallet, referring to its hammer-like shape. "Medial" is added to indicate its position on the inner side of the ankle.
