The frontal bone forms the forehead and the anterior portion of the cranial vault, protecting the frontal lobes of the brain. It extends from the supraorbital ridges to the coronal suture and includes the roof of the orbital cavities that protect the eyes. This single bone is unique in that it starts as two separate halves in infants that typically fuse during early childhood, leaving only a trace of the original metopic suture.

The name combines "frontal" from the Latin "frontalis" meaning "of the front," referring to its position at the front of the skull. The bone was named this way because it literally forms the front of the skull.
