The zygomatic bone, commonly known as the cheekbone, forms the prominence of the cheeks and part of the eye socket. It provides structural support to the face, protects the eyes, and serves as an attachment site for facial muscles involved in expression and chewing. Its arch also helps distribute force from the jaw during biting.
The name "zygomatic" comes from the Greek zygon, meaning "yoke" or "bridge," referring to its arch-like connection between the face and skull.
