The manubrium forms the superior portion of the sternum (breastbone) and articulates with the clavicles and first two ribs. It serves as a crucial attachment point for several major muscles involved in breathing and upper limb movement. This broad, thick bone helps protect underlying vital organs while providing stability for the upper ribcage and shoulder girdle.

The word "manubrium" comes from Latin, meaning "handle" or "hilt of a sword." This name was chosen because of its position and shape, resembling a handle at the top of the sternum.
