The olecranon is the prominent bony projection at the elbow that forms the tip of the ulna. It provides leverage for the triceps muscle to extend the forearm at the elbow joint. This sturdy hook-like process also protects the elbow joint and creates the characteristic point of the elbow.
The name combines the Greek words "olene" meaning elbow and "kranion" meaning head, literally translating to "head of the elbow.
