Palmaris Longus is a slender, superficial muscle located in the forearm. Its primary function is to assist in flexing the wrist and tensing the palmar aponeurosis, playing a minor role in grip strength. Remarkably, it is absent in about 10-15% of the population without noticeable loss of hand function.

The name "Palmaris Longus" originates from the Latin word "palmaris," meaning "pertaining to the palm," and "longus," meaning "long," highlighting its connection to the palm and its elongated form.

Without the Palmaris Longus, the human body can still perform most wrist flexion and grip functions efficiently due to the presence of other compensatory muscles. However, in its absence, there may be a slight reduction in wrist flexion strength and tension across the palm aponeurosis.
