First Dorsal Interosseus is a muscle located in the hand, responsible for enabling the movement of the index finger away from the thumb, a motion known as abduction. It plays a critical role in the gripping and precision of pinching actions alongside thumb movement. This muscle contributes significantly to hand dexterity and the ability to manipulate objects with precision.

The name "dorsal interosseus" derives from Latin, where "dorsal" refers to the back or posterior of the hand, and "interosseus" means "between bones," indicating its position in the hand.

If the First Dorsal Interosseus were absent or damaged, an individual would experience difficulty in performing tasks requiring fine motor skills, such as writing or buttoning a shirt, due to weakened abduction of the index finger.
